I don't even know where to start with this whole gay marriage drama going around. I honestly believe that this shouldn't even be this massive issue everyone is talking about. It is about civil rights, something that we all should have. This should be a default thing, it shouldn't have to be discussed! Considering we live in a world where racism is not part of the law anymore (compared to back in the day when 'white people' and 'black people' had to go to different stores, churches and so on), why is homophobia such a big thing? SERIOUSLY.
I can understand why some hard core religious people believe that the word marriage shouldn't be used for same sex couples. But civil unions don't give them the same privileges as marriage does. There is no way that they will make up a new word for it, it'd be absurd. I don't get why the hard core religious people care so much about what other people do!
There are all kinds of people in this world. Can't we all just have the same rights? They claim that marriage is about having a family, making children and such. The same way that same sex couples can't have children of their own, infertile straight couples can't either. Yet they have the right to get married. So that theory is out the window.
There's the whole bullshit about what the bible says and how it defines marriage. But haven't we moved on from that? Haven't we realised that the bible is more of a metaphor than anything else? That is shouldn't be taken word by word? I mean, the number of religious people that believe in evolution is massive! That doesn't mean that the bible is wrong about creation and that those people shouldn't believe in a god. It just means that things change. They can't expect people to live by a book that was written so long ago. So much has changed since then!
I understand how back in the day people were against homosexuals. People thought it was a choice, a way of life, whatever. But now there is so much proof showing that it is NOT a choice. Just like you can't choose your race, you can't choose your sexuality. Your DNA choses it for you. How can people not understand that?
I hate seeing pictures of people holding signs and judging gay people, saying how sinful they are and all that. Didn't they do that to black people back in the day? Hopefully in a few years when we look back, those people will realise how wrong they were of doing what they did. How many people they hurt.
Marriage should be about love and commitment. There is no reason why 2 people of the same sex can't be just as in love and committed as 2 people of different sexes. At the same time, they could all be messed up. Not every straight marriage works. I'm sure not every same sex marriage would work either. But should we really be denying those people to have the right to try?
I'm all for same sex marriage. Maybe they will make straight people realise how important marriage really is. How much commitment is involved in getting married. That 2 people should never rush into it. I don't agree with the new trend going around where straight people won't get married until everyone else has the right to. If you want to get married, if you think it is the right time, don't let other people stop you. You should still help them fight for their rights, but not while sacrificing your own happiness. I know this might sound selfish, but change takes time. I'm sure there will be lots of same sex couples passing away before the law is on their side. This kind of change takes many years. But at least the first step has been taken: one of the most influential man at the moment has said that he believes in same sex marriage. I'm sure this has pissed a lot of people off. But by explaining how his mind evolved and that he now understands, I know he has pushed a lot of people sitting in the fence.
A african american president saying he believes in same sex marriage. Now that's something you don't see everyday. But hopefully one day it will be.
