I've never been friends with a vegetarian. At least not the hardcore type. I know a few people who try to be vegetarians or at least try to avoid eating so much meat. I've also worked/volunteered with vegetarians. But I can't say I have ever been really good friends with a proper vegetarian. It's not like I quiz people in what they eat when I first meet them and if they say they don't eat meat I will cut relations with them! It just hasn't happened.
I know this will sounds stereotypical, but I think choosing to be a vegetarian involves going into a different group. Wait. That sentence makes no sense. What I mean is, being vegetarian is like being a hipster or barbie girl or sporty or any other type of group you can choose. Vegetarians attract other vegetarians. It's a way of life. But I think a lot of people do it wrong.
One of my friend's sister became a vegetarian because she is really into the whole 'save the planet' stuff. She plants her own veggies and tries to minimise the amount of CO2 she produces - the reason why she wouldn't eat meat. But then she started feeling very sick, the vitamin pills just weren't cutting it. So now she eats meat that she knows where it came from and all.
You see, not eating meat has side effects: it makes you sick. Taking vitamin pills is not the same as eating meat. I agree that there is a lot of fucked up stuff happening with the meat industry. But I don't think it is worth sacrificing your health to change it. There must be another way! I mean, look at all the chicken and eggs at supermarkets now compared to a few years back: a lot of them are free range/RSPCA approved. I know that has nothing to do with the CO2 levels, but it means those animals have a better life than the generations before them.
I've met a few people who simply hate vegetarians. They don't understand their point of view, they don't even try. Those people will go out of their way to eat twice as much meat to make sure it 'balances out' for all the vegetarians. How screwed up is that? I think the only reason they do that is because they have met vegetarians who tried to guilt trip them with the whole 'you are killing innocent animals' bullshit. It's kinda like hardcore religious people: the more they try to shove their believes down your throat, the more you will close up and hate that religion. The same goes for hardcore vegetarians.
Meat is good for you. By not eating it, you will teach the next generation that it is ok to be unhealthy and get sick all the time. By eating it the right way (knowing where it comes from and how it is killed), you will teach the next generation that they should care about all living things and at the same time that evolution shows that they can't survive without meat.
